A ship with 300,000 tons of ore, hired by Vale, sinks off the coast of Maranhão. Experts say the leak could cause an environmental disaster for marine fauna.
The Brazilian Navy confirmed the name of the vessel: MV Stella Banner.
The newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo reported that the ship "drifted about 100 kilometers from the port of Itaqui, in Maranhão, from where it left, heading for the port of Qingdao, China, where it was expected to arrive on April 4. According to the Navy, "at the moment the ship is stranded" due to a maneuver made by its captain. By note, the Navy stated that the causes of the accident have not yet been identified and that the problem occurred at 9:30 p.m. on Monday, 24.".
The navy also reported that "four tugboats moved towards the ship to collect more information and provide support, if necessary (...) The crew remains safely in the area on board the tugboats sent".
