The measure intends to cheapen not only the import of equipment used by productive sectors, but also to decrease the price of imported electronics, such as cell phones, computers and medical equipment.
The decision covers 1,495 products and will begin to be effective seven days after the publication of the resolution of the Board of Foreign Trade (Camex), which approved the measure, which should occur on Thursday.
"The measure benefits the Brazilian consumer and small and medium entrepreneurs, with the reduction of import tariffs on products such as mobile phones and notebooks, from 16% to 14.4%, and medical X-ray equipment and optical microscopes, from 14% to 12.6%," the official statement said.
The Ministry of Economy projects a price drop in the range of 2% to 5% for the final consumer. According to the statement, the goal is to "increase productivity not only in these sectors, but throughout the economy.
The measure was approved on Wednesday, in a meeting of the Executive Committee (Gecex) of the Foreign Trade Chamber of the Ministry of Economy (Camex), and covers 1,495 Mercosur Common Nomenclature (NCM) codes that do not depend on negotiation with the other Mercosur partners.
According to the Secretary of Foreign Trade of the Ministry of Economy, Lucas Ferraz, the reduction should general an estimated annual reduction of $ 250 million. The reduction comes into force seven days after the publication of the resolution, which is scheduled for Thursday (18).
